It can occur as a result of damage to the lymphatic system, for example because of surgery or radiotherapy to the lymph nodes under the arm and surrounding. Patients must carefully watch for swelling or changes. Patients with lymphedema are more likely to have an infection in the affected arm. If this happens in the arm or groin, it may cause a build-up of fluid that can cause swelling in the arm or leg. More lymph nodes are removed with ALND, which raises the risk of lymphedema.
